You know, now that I think about it. It really is disconcerting that there is no record of the duchesses mother's. That means that for centuries women, of unknown family background have been marrying into a Ducal household that is second in power to the King. Or, even more disturbing, Phillip and the house of Taran convinced women of noble births and their families to not only have their daughter give birth to a duke's child, and then have that child marry marry the duke. That means that for centuries these people have aided and ebetted incest. The most plausible scenario I can think of is taking unknown women and having them be adopted by noble vassels. But that's still a big ask. Did they just kill all the opposition? They did say that Hugo is the first Duke of Taran to break from tradition and get involved in politics. But still that would be a lot of generations of kings that just stood idly by and watched their subjects in the north get killed every 20 years or so.
